Overall, the amounts increased every year, With the gap between Men and Women participants are getting closed over the period.

At the start of the Olympics, there were 3,000 male participants and only a few women took part in it. However, female participants increased significantly from year to year. It seems that in 1952 less than 1,000 Women participated in this event and the number jumped to 1,500 and around 5,000 in 1984 and 2012 respectively. In contrast for male participants, there was a gradual increase from 4,500 in 1952 to more than 5,000 in 1984 and nearly 6,000 in 2012.

The total number of participating athletes both male and female also increased throughout this century, from just below 4,000 in 1924 to a little more than 10,000 in 2012. the most significant increase occurred between 1984 to 2012 with a change of more or less than 40%
